Speedway Hazard

Sir,—As a regular speedway patron I would like to draw your attention to a dangerous situation which has arisen at the Templeton Speedway. Two weeks ago a midget car competitor crashed through the safety fence, narrowly missing spectators and severely injuring himself on a wire rope at the back of the fence. Again last Saturday another midget car driver crashed through the fence, injuring himself and bringing down 10 feet of the barrier. Is anything to be done to reduce the hazard? Spectators and drivers who enjoy this sport should not be exposed, to the risk of death or injury.— Youns etc., STAND WELL BACK. January 30, 1964,

[The secretary of the Christchurch Speedway Association (Mr E. T- Mora) replies: “The management is aware of the danger bf vehicles going through the safety fence and appropriate steps had been, taken before receipt of this letter. A wire mesh has been erected behind the fence on the spectator side and the track side has been lined with threeply. This should make impossible further incidents of this nature.”]
