MEMORIAL TO KENNEDY
Poor Response By Public There has been a disappointing response to the appeal for a New Zealand memorial to President Kennedy, and so far the Christchurch City Council has received only £33 19s 4d in 24 donations. Yesterday, the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) passed on a further message he had received- from the Prime Minister (Mr Hblyoake). This said that the Government had set aside £15,000 towards the fund, and Mr Holyoake hoped that public contributions would match the sum. Many generous gifts had been received, but the fund had some way to go before contributions equalled the Government's contribution. “This fund will stand as a permanent memorial to a great American, a great world leader, and one whose leadership and iddals in his short life have struck a warm response in the hearts of New Zealanders,” the Prime Minister said.
