TRADING BANK BUSINESS
Cheques Handled Rise 20 p.c.
Cheques totalling about £6oom were handled by trading banks in January, nearly 20 per cent more than in January last year, according to details released by the research directorate of the New Zealand Bankers’ Association. For December the total was more than £9oom, compared with about £6oom in the previous December. Total credit limits fell by £2m during January, but advances rose by £3m, reducing unexercised overdraft authorities by £sm. The term loan and export promotion- funds are now fully committed although not all the money has yet been uplifted. Unless the funds are augmented by fresh releases of trading bank deposits frozen at the -Reserve Bank, repayments will determine the. extent to which new loans can be made.
