Rotary Fellow Arrives For Year At University
Mr J. S. Bridges, a Rotary Foundation fellow from the United States, arrived in Christchurch last evening for a year’s post-graduate study at the University of Canterbury. He is 22. ' Mr Bridges said he looked forward to taking as wide a part as possible in the life of the university and. to learning about New Zealand through Rotary Club members who had already been very helpful. Mr Bridges comes from Columbus, Indiana. He went to high school there and then graduated bachelor of arts last year at De Pauw University, Greencastle, Indiana. He advanced in political science.
His outside interests have been wide. He is an active Young Republican, a keen member of the Methodist Students’ Foundation, and has taken a lively part in lay theological study groups. He has represented his university in swimming and in athletics (mile and two miles) and “loves” American football, although he dropped this to concentrate on his studies. Mr Bridges .is one of 133 Rotary Foundation fellows chosen this year among out-
standing graduate students in 34 countries for study abroadMr Bridges will study political . science at the University of Canterbury although he intends eventually to prepare himself for a career in law.
The Christchurch Rotary Club will take an active interest in this student. He will be offered hosoitality in many homes and a member will serve as his personal counsellor during his stay.
