“AWES, NOT ENEMIES”
Synthetics And Wool (N.Z, Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 18. Synthetic fibres and wool are allies, not enemies, said Lord Eccles, a director of Courtaulds, Ltd., the British fibre manufacturers, in Auckland today.
Lord Eccles, a former Minister of Education and president of the Board of Trade, is visiting New Zealand for talks on the establishment of Fibremakers (N.Z.), Ltd.’s nylon plant at Wirt He discounted fears that the plant would adversely affect the market for wool. Wool was not the dominating fibre in the world and, in fact, had only 10 per cent of the fibre market. Its big disadvantage was that all-woollen garments could not be cleaned in washing machines with modem detergents.
As part of a blended cloth, however, wool not only gained increased sales, but shared the benefits of heavy advertising, by the makers of synthetic fibres.
