To Study Linguistics At University Of Hawaii

Mr Lawrence A. Reid, of Christchurch, has entered the University of Hawaii at Honolulu on a scholarship of its East West Centre. The centre was created by the United States Congress to increase understanding in the AsianPacific area. Studies are directed primarily at developing member countries. Mr Reid will study for a master's degree in linguistics A'though he has not formally graduated in the subject he has been admitted to the honours school after A passes in all sections of a special entrance examination, Mr Reid, whose parents, Mr and Mrs L Reid, live at 24 Browning street, Christchurch. was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, and then studied for a bachelor of music degree at the University of Canterbury but he went overseas before completing the degree. While f. student he was a programme arranger for 3YA. He went to the Commonwealth Bible College of the Assemblies of God in Brisbane and was dux in his final year. During this period he was a regular summer student at the Institute of Linguistics of Wycliffe Bible Translators held annually in Melbourne. This institute is primarily interested in putting into writing the languages of little-known tribes. From it

Mr Reid went to the Philippines for five years and put the Gospel according to St Mark into a written language for a mountain tribe near Luzon. He also served as a language consultant to missionaries in the area. From this work Mr Reid went to the University of Hawaii last year as a teaching assistant, and has now been invited to take a master’s degree and then complete a doctorate in philosophy. Mr Reid is married and has three children, the last born soon after the family arrived i- Honolulu. The East-West Centre this year has 580 students on scholarships from 27 Asian and Pacific countries and from the United States.
