'Measure Of Agreement’ In London Meat Talks
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Feb. 17. Although there was no definite result, a considerable measure of agreement was reached in the talks between representatives of the British Government and countries supplying meat to the United Kingdom, said the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall)
“The meeting concluded on the understanding that the various participants would report to their Governments,” said Mr Marshall. “There have been many changes in the British .market since the existing meat arrangements were established a decade ago. “The New Zealand Government is ready to carry on the negotiations for new arrangements, which, while preserving our traditional market in Britain, will also provide more orderly marketing of meat, both imported and home-produced. “In the meantime,” said Mr Marshall, “our approach continues to be positive and our treaty rights remain unaffected.”
In Canberra, the Minister of Trade (Mr J. E. McEwen) said Australia and the United States have agreed
on the broad outlines of an arrangement for marketing Australian meat in the United States. He said that negotiations between Australia and the United States were almost finished. Commenting in Wellington oh Mr McEwen’s statement, Mr Marshall said: “We expect that the final terms will be agreed on soon. We believe they will be reasonably satisfactory.”
