EXPLOSION AND FIRE

Transformer Damaged (N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, February 17. A house shook, a car window was smashed and shattered porcelain spread over 100 yards when part of a main transformer blew up and then caught fire in the Hamilton sub-station, Ruakura road, last night. The spectacular explosion was heard a mile away in Hillcrest. Immediate estimates of the cost of damage were £4OO to £5OO. Te Awamutu was without electricity for nine minutes before Electricity Department employees provided alternative power. The explosion occurred at about 8 p.m. A high-tension 4ft bushing on top of a main transformer was smashed to pieces. Other bushings were damaged. Fire sprung from the topi of the porcelain bushing, but department employees had it under control in about 10 minutes.
