N.I. VISIT OF U.S. MISSION

Manufacturers Disappointed

Many overseas visitors to New Zealand by-passed the South Island, the president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. G. Pearce) told Mr R. Garnitz, the advance programme officer of the first official trade mission from the United States to visit New Zealand, yesetrday. Mr Pearce was speaking at a luncheon meeting of the association to enable members to meet Mr Garnitz. Tire mission will reach Wellington on Saturday.

“As manufacturers in Canterbury we are, extremely

disappointed that the trade mission is not coming to the South Island,” said Mr Pearce. ‘‘l don’t know who planned the mission, but we do feel strongly in the South Island about this and other such cases.”

In reply to Mr Pearce, Mr Garnitz said that the reason the mission was not coming to Christchurch was basically a matter of time. He hoped that in the foreseeable future another United States trade mission would visit New Zealand and the South Island would definitely be included in the itinerary. In very few instances had United States trade missions not returned to a particular country within two or three years at the most.
