Escaped From Police And Wants To Stay

AUCKLAND, Feb. 17.
Although he escaped from custody at the Auckland Central Police Station on Saturday, a 24-year-old Indian from Fiji was allowed bail by Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. Dayaram Nanlal. (Mr R. L. Maclaren) admitted escaping, and another - charge of remaining in New Zealand beyond the period of an Immigration Department permit.
The Court was told Nanlal arrived in Nev’ Zealand in May on a three-month permit. He did not leave and. living under another name, was found with difficulty by the Immigration Department. Detective Senior-Sergeant R. C. Anderson said Nanlal was arrested on Saturday morning. He had the use of the common exercise enclosure at the station.
He was pursued and was caught trying to scale a fence. Mr Maclaren said Nanlal, who had spent four years at Auckland secondary schools, wanted to seek greater opportunities outside Fiji. He was refused permits to stay in Australia and England/ He was told he could not stay here, and passage was booked for his return to Fiji on February 4. He did not return and on February 11 married a young Maori girl.
He and his wife wished to apply for permanent residence here, said his counsel Mr Maclaren conceded that such an application was “likely to be futile,” but Nanlal still wished to make it. The Magistrate remanded him until March 2, to enable the application to be made, and allowed him bail
