PRICE OF 21b LOAF
Bakers Say Is 2d (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 17. Many Auckland bakers believed the retail price of ordinary bread should be Is Id to Is 2d a 21b loaf, if the flour subsidy was abolished. as recommended by the Government-appointed committee, a baker said today. This price would include a greater profit margin for the retailer and a higher return to bakers to allow them to improve the quality of bread, he said. If bread had to be wrapped, an extra 2d a loaf would have to be added. He said bakers generally favoured the ending of the flour subsidy, but they also wanted price control removed and the retailer’s profit margin of jd a 21b loaf increased. Unrestricted prices would allow bakers to off-set the extra cost of up-grading this bread. The president of the Auckland Master Bakers’ Association. Mr C. H. Thomas, is in Wellington attending the annual conference of the Federation of Bakers and Pastrycooks.
