ASKED TO EXPLAIN

"Why The Delay?” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 17. ‘‘While there are some admirable features in the report of the Committee of Inquiry on Wheat, Flour, and Bread, there are certain aspects which call for an immediate Government explanation,” said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nordmeyer) in a statement issued today. ‘‘First, why was a report which was presented to the Government on October 9 withheld from publication until February 17? ‘‘Second, what does the Government intend to do concerning the major recommendation of the committee, that the flour subsidy be abolished? “It must be obvious that this subsidy plays a considerable part in holding living costs. If the Government has any intention of reducing or removing the subsidy, an immediate announcement to this effect should be made.”

“The public would welcome the committee’s recommendation that all bread should be wrapped before sale to the consumer,’’ said Mr Nordmeyer.
