LONDON, February 17. Relics of a lost civilisation have been found 70 miles south of Lusaka in Northern Rhodesia, the “Daily Telegraph” reported. The discovery, made in Gwembe valley at Ingombe Ilede, shows that over 1000 years ago people hitherto unknown to historians wore .gold ornaments, spun and wove cotton and traded copper. The keeper of pre-history in Northern Rhodesia, Dr. Fagan, said tests conducted
in New York showed that “gold burials” had taken place at Ingombe Ilede as long ago as 850 A.D. Dr. Fagan said people of the lost civilisation were racially very similar to the Northern Rhodesians of today. Excavations had revealed skeletons with legs and arms ringed with copper bangles. Around their necks were | gold and glass beads, believed to have come from India. The discovery also showed that cotton spinning and weaving—crafts which have since died in Northern Rhoidesia—were also practised.
