IRON LUNG INVENTOR
C. M. Hammond Dies At 85 (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MEMPHIS (Tennessee), February 17. Dr. Charles Morgan Hammond, inventor of the iron lung, died at his home .in Whitehaven yesterday. He was 85. Hammond got the idea for his iron lung while suffering from pleurisy in 1906. While trying to breathe, he wondered if he could reduce the air pressure over his tortured lungs. In his sick bed, Hammond drew the preliminary sketches.
On his first day out of bed he visited a carpentermechanic on the plantation where he lived near West Memphis, Arkansas, and they built a crude respirator which fitted over the chest and was operated by hand.
