REFERENDUM SOUGHT

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, February 17. The Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, Dr. H. R. Gough, joined with leaders of other churches last night in calling on the New South Wales Government to hold a referendum on off-course betting. The Government intends to introduce off-course totalisator betting in New South Wales later this yearThe archbishop, and other speakers at a Sydney meeting, said the fact that a single judge, sitting as a Royal Commissioner, had recommended a form of offcourse betting, did not constitute a mandate to legislate without consulting the people. Dr. Gough said that the churches were not seeking to impose their wills on the majority of people, but were asking the Government to find out what the majority really wanted.
