Hours Of Work Limited Because Of Noise

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Feb. 16. Technicians are not allowed to work for more than four hours a day at the Hawkins Hill radar station. This limit, has been set on medical advice because of the constant, nerve-shattering noise of the 52ft long 18ft wide radar aerial constantly, grinding round and round on the roof. In high winds—and 40 knots is the normal—the decibels increase. The noise reverbrates through the concrete building below to increase the nervous tension of the men servicing the delicate radar equipment it houses. A special rest room has been built within the building to enable the staff to get away from it all. It has been built to the standards of' » broadcasting studio which is designed to kill the slightest sound. Even within its sound-

deadening walls the grinding ..continues —jangling, exhaust"ing, never ending. These were among the unexpected snippets of information picked up by a party of engineers who visited the Hawkins Hill radar installation. They .were delegates to the' fiftieth- jubilee conference of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers.
