Surf Life-Saving G. Dann Wins Coveted Double

G. Dann (New Brighton) won the coveted double, the senior belt title and the senior surf race title, in the Canterbury surf life-saving championships which concluded yesterday. This double has been achieved only once before in recent years, by R. Blair. Dann was the holder of the senior surf race championship which he won last season- T. Gaskell (Waimairi), the winner of last season’s belt championship, was unable to finish in a place. A moderate but choppy sea was running both yesterday and Saturday, and swimmers received little assistance from shoots. Conditions were overcast and temperatures cold.

There were 52 starters in the senior surf race championship yesterday. Dann took an early lead and held it to round the buoys about five yards clear of the rest of the field. A strong burst by K Lanyon (South Brighton) and I. Greig (Waimairi) brought them within challenging distance in the breakers, but Dann’s finish was too strong and he crossed the line 15 yards ahead of Lanyon, the second man, Greig finished a close third.

In the senior belt event on Saturday, Dann shot away at the gun, winning as he liked. He finished almost 30sec ahead of the second man, G. Le Cren (Taylor’s Mistake). J. Turpin, his club-mate, swam well to beat the defending champion, Gaskell, for third place. As anticipated, Miss L Harrow (Taylor’s Mistake), the present New Zealand women’s surf race champion, won the Canterbury women’s surf race title comfortably.

In finishing second, Miss EEdwards (Waimairi) defeated several highly regarded competitors. R. Dalton (North Beach) won easily in the senior surf ski championship. It was his fifth successive Canterbury surf ski title. Results were:— SATURDAY Senior Event* Belt championship (former holder, T. Gaskell, Waimairi).— Final: G. Dann (New Brighton) 1, G.
