CRICKET LEADING TEAMS IN DIFFICULTIES
Hastings And Bishop Best In Day Of Brisk Scoring
Although the leading team, St. Albans, was outplayed by Old Collegians when the ninth round of the senior championship began on Saturday, its nearest rival, Riccarton, was also in difficulties against Sydenham.
On a day of brisk scoring, there were two outstanding batting feats. B. F. Hastings scored a century before lunch and finished with 143 for West Christchurch-University against Old Boys, and the Old Collegians opener, A. T. Bishop, batted right through his team’s innings to make 101 not out.
East Christchurch-Shirley headed Lancaster Park on the first innings and took bonus points for the first time this season. West Christchurch-University scored more than 300 for the second time in succeeding matches.
The fastest scoring was at Sydenham Park, where Riccarton and Sydenham totalled 439 for the day. Fine weather and fast outfields invited swift scoring.
Hastings gave a dashtag display in scaring has second club century of the summer, and Bishop also won much admiration for his tenacity for the first 50 of his runs and his vigorous attacking in making the second half of the century. A. T. Waters (West Christ-church-University) batted most attractively for 76, and others who made half-cen-turies were D. L. Gallop and W. Thomsen (Sydenham), D. Steed and L McK. Sinclair (Riccarton), R. T. Dowker (Lancaster Park) and P. G. Coman (East ChristchurchShirley).
The outstanding bowlers were the Old Collegians spinners, B. A- Carpenter and M. G. Lester, who shared the St Albans wickets evenly. Scores: Lancaster Park 147; East Christchurch - Shirley 163 for five. Riccarton 223; Sydenham 216 for 4. West Christchurch-Vni-versity 330; Old Boys 70 for 2. Old Collegians 229 and 13 for none; St Albans 129.
