EXPLOSION IN TIMARU
Cause Still Unexplained (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, Feb. 16. Residents of MacDonald street, at the north end of Timaru, felt the concussion from a violent explosion at about 8.23 p.m. on Saturday. Householders in Andrew street, who were on the southern fringe of the mysterious air burst, said it was accompanied by a bright blue flash. ■’ Houses on the south side of MacDonald street were jolted, and several occupants who rushed out in alarm asserted that the detonation caused a tremendous thump. Power Not Affected South Canterbury Electric Power Board maintenance staff who investigated the explosion were mystified. Power was not disrupted, and there was nothing to suggest that lines had been crossed. It was not raining at the time, but there were clouds to the south. Nor could any connexion be found between the explosion and a fault which occurred in an underground telephone cable in the same area on Sunday morning when 70 subscribers were affected.
