LONDON, Feb. 16. Skilled British railway workers are rushing to apply for jobs in Australia. Almost 300 railwaymen have already joined the queue for higher paid jobs in the sun in response to a recruiting campaign launched in London recently by the Victorian Government. About another 400 are expected to follow them.
The Victorian Government’s first advertisement for railwaymen in the national press brought such a flood of replies that the State railway employment officer is being flown to London to deal with them himself. Mr Keith Allen, in London to recruit 500 men for the Melbourne tramways, said he had also had great success with his campaign. About 300 London busmen had so far been attracted by the prospect of working a shorter week for higher wages in Australia. Next week both campaigns switch to provincial areas where another 200 busmen and railwaymen will be signed on.
