EMERSON TO DEFY BAN
Entered For U.S. Tennis (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Feb. 12. The Lawn Tennis Association of Australia has no power to stop R. Emerson playing in the United States indoor championships, the association’s president (Mr Norman Strange) said today. He was commenting on a report that tire organisers of the United States indoor titles had accepted Emerson’s entry. The L.T.A.A. has instructed its players to remain in Australia until March 31. If they do not stay they cannot receive expenses overseas before that date.
Mr Strange said the L.T.A.A, had written and cabled to the U.S.L.T.A. in the last 10 days advising it of this.
“But if the Americans accept an entry we have no power to stop our players competing,” Mr Strange said. The L.T.A.A. introduced its March 31 rule following agitation from metropolitan and country tennis centres.
"If players leave before March 31, these centres, which do so much for tennis, will have no chance of seeing the Australian stars,” Mr Strange said.
