4100 LOUSY SHEEP

Department of Agriculture officers found that no fewer than 60 pens of sheep yarded at Addington yesterday were lousy. Altogether 4100 sheep had to be put through the dip, including 2600 lambs and 1500 ewes. Mr A. R. Diack, senior livestock instructor of the department for the Christchurch district, said that it was probably the biggest number found infested with lice at the market since 1952.

Since the beginning' of the year almost 11,000 sheep at the yards have been found lousy. Mr Diack said that the infestations yesterday were generally light to

medium and in odd cases farmers could have been unaware that their sheep were infested.

Every farmer should inspect his sheep for lice before sending them into the market or to a ewe fair, he said. The department was only too willing to show farmers what lice were if they were uncertain.

Most of the lousy sheep yarded yesterday came from North Canterbury, and Mr Diack said that obviously the infestation was far too widespread.

Lousy sheep sent to ewe fairs would not be sold, and would be sent home, he said.
