Newspaper Takeover Bid
Sir.—The ease with which a Canadian businessman has ; gained control of 100 newspapers is perturbing. It is even more perturbing that there has not been a flood of prv.test at his attempt to purchase control of the “Dominion." and that Mr i Holyoake regards this as 8 W private matter. Once sold, control of the newspaper cannot be regained. Presum - ably the shareholders are hoping for financial gain and 1 many may be tempted to take i tiffs opportunity of making it. ' Democracy is vulnerable i when the future of a leading : newspaper depends on such considerations. If the Gov-, eminent has no power other I than persuasion to keep with- , in New Zealand the control !of such a vital democratic institution. I suggest the situ- ! ation urgently needs reviewj ing. People who are concerned should let the Governi menit know that they desire prompt action to prevent the “Dominion” falling irrevocably under the control of an overseas millionaire.—Yours, etc., P S. COOK. January 24. 1964
