SEARCH OFF OARO
Flares At Sea Reported Two boats and an aircraft searched an area off the Marlborough coast yesterday after campers at Oaro had reported seeing flares out to sea in the morning. The search, by boats and a Devon aircraft from the Royal New Zealand Air Force station, Wigram, proved negative, and when the police at Kaikoura later interviewed the campers it was found that what had been seen by them were not flares. The campers originally reported the matter to the Kaikoura police, who relayed the information to Christchurch Then about 11.40 a.m. Wigram was requested to send a plane over the area. The Devon took off about 12.25 p.m. A search was made over the reported area by the pique. In addition, a boat near the Conway river area was diverted to assist in the search, and another was brought in from Kaikoura. The plane was airborne for about three hours, and the boats searched for a little longer.
