U.K. GOLFERS DECIDE
Playing With Bigger Ball (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON, January 14. Britain’s professional golfers yesterday decided to use the bigger American ball in all major British tournaments this year. The switch from the smaller British ball was announced after a meeting of the P.G.A. executive committee. The American ball is 1.68 in in diameter, compared with the British ball’s 1.62 in. The P.G.A. secretary, Colonel Harry Read, said: “It is a trial for this year only. The use of the ball will be reviewed at the end of the season.” Play-Off Over 18 Holes (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ST. ANDREWS, Jan. 13. A change in the rules for the play-off in the event of a tie will operate for the British Open golf championship, beginning with the 1964 title at St. Andrews, on July 8,9, and 10. The play-off will be over 18 holes, instead of 36. If the match is still undecided, a hole-by-hole play-off will take place immediately. Last year there was a tie between R. J. Charles (New Zealand) and the American. Phil Rodgers. In the 36-hole play-off, Charles won by eight strokes to become the first left-hander to win the title.
