NOT ENOUGH PROMOTION
School Staff Changes Call (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, January 13. The New Zealand Education Institute is to press for additional senior staff in positions of responsibility in schools. This was decided by the Dominion executive in Napier today. The chief inspector of primary schools for New Zealand, Mr J. L. Ewing, of Wellington, who was present, was handed a schedule of duties held to warrant such staff additions. It was decided that the institute was to press for regrading of schools with additional posts of responsibility providing increased opportunities for leadership, both in handling aspects of the curriculum, and in meeting complexities of modern education methods. A statement issued from the conference today said it had teen a matter of concern that promotion into positions of responsibility was more readily available for women teachers than for men. This situation had become particularly acute since the equal pay provisions had teen introduced.
At present, women were moving into positions of responsibility after as little as three years’ service, whereas men had to serve at least 12 years before being promoted to comparable posts.
