Upsets In Girls’ Sponsored Golf

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Jan. 13. The diminutive Miss Dawn Peters, of Maramarua, caused a major upset on the opening day of the junior girls’ sponsored golf tournament at the Hutt course today when she eliminated the New South Wales team captain, Miss Beatrice Hayley, 1 up in their secbnd round match. Miss Peters, her immaculate approach shots the deciding factor, returned a 77. Miss Hayley.' Australian senior champion in 1961, was a little out of touch but played. some lovely shots. Her tee shot from the sixteenth could not have been bettered by the best male players. Another upset was the defeat of the New Zealand junior champion, Miss Jane Butler (Rotorua) by Miss Heather Booth (Gisborne). Miss Butler, out in 34 with a lead of 3 up, took 43 over the

last nine and had her lead steadily cut down. The day’s outstanding performances were those of the Australians Miss Diana Cross and Miss Judy Mancell, who met in the second round. Miss Cross, already an international, won 2 and 1. Getting extraordinary length into her tee shots, she went to a 5 up lead with threes on the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth holes. Miss Mancell, hampered by a knee injury, put up an amazing fight to be so close at the finish. Miss Marea Hickey, the youngest Australian, qualified for tomorrow’s semi-finals, was extended in her morning match against the Aucklander Miss Gillian Bawden, being 3 down after nine holes, but Miss Bawden wilted badly over the final section and won only two holes.

In the semi-finals tomorrow Miss Cross plays Miss Booth and Miss Hickey plays Miss Peters, The boys’ championship was robbed of some interest when the probable finalist D. R. Hope (Christchurch) was forced to withdraw. M. Collins (Manor Park) had two comfortable wins and appeared to have the championship in safe keeping. Results: Girls First Round.—Miss D.
