Fish Prices

Sir, —Your reports concerning the fresh fish sold at the Lyttelton wharf has let the proverbial cat out of the bag only to find a nigger in the woodpile. The disclosure has created food for thought and the publicity of the prices offered to and received by the fishermen has enabled many consumers near the source of supply to purchase fresh seafood at reasonable fishermen’s prices. Some time ago local fishermen were compelled to cease the sale of fresh fish at their boat harbour in Sumner. It would appear that a similar attempt has been made in Lyttelton to maintain a fingertip control of an unrealistic price structure. Incidentally on the date of your report the retail price of groper with skin and bone was 3s 4d per lb and less skin and bone 4s per lb which is much dearer than red meats especially prime ox topside beef. Smoked blue cod was 3s 6d per lb.—Yours, etc., RIP VAN WINKLE. January 13, 1964.
