Strange Ducklings

(New Zealand Press Association)

INVERCARGILL, Jain. 13. Mr G. Peterson, caretaker at Andersons Park, near Invercargill, has crossed a white Indian runner drake with a paradise duck, and the two ducklings, now five weeks old, have left wildlife experts amazed. It was not known that the two breeds could be crossed—in captivity or in their natural environment, Mr Peterson said today. The ducklings are already bigger than their

mother. Their sex is not known although they have the call and colouring of a paradise duck and the body of a runner drake. “If anybody else has crossed these ducks, I’d be interested to hear about it,” said Mr Peterson. He intends to keep the ducks to see what develops. He tried three different paradise drakes with the duck, but this was the first time the duck had produced any offspring.
