Tribunal Plan Not Favoured
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 13. Official circles in Wellington favour the prompt reference of fire service disputes to a new form of local disputes committees relying initially on •’onciliation. rather than a national tribunal which would arbitrate. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) would not comment today on proposals by the secretary jf the Federated Fire Brigades Employees’ Union (Mr T. HiU) for a tribunal He is believed, however, to be hopeful that some temporary agreement may soon be reached to prevent seven major fire brigades from refusing ail but essential work from next Monday, because of a dispute between Auckland firemen and their board. Although a national disputes committee is now established in the freezing industry, legislative authority already exists for the creation of local committees. Given support by fire boards, provision for them could be written into awards.
Moves *o establish any new such machinery may await the report of a committee which has been studying disputes between the Wellington Fire Board and its firemen. This report is not expected to be published before the middle of February.
