N.Z. Pacers Beaten

(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) MELBOURNE, January 12. The four-year-old South Australian pacer Minuteman led all the way to defeat the New Zealand mare Robin Dundee, in the £3OOO Hunter Cup (14 furlongs) at the Melbourne Show Grounds last night. Tactile, the hot favourite at 5/4 on, ran fourth. Minuteman (limit) defeated pobin. Dundee (24 yards) by three yards, with the local mare Angelique (limit) five yards away third. The winner started at 6/1 and ran the 14 furlongs in 3min 46sec, a mile rate of 2min 9 l-ssec. Robin Dundee (11/2) had the fastest mile rate of 2min 8 2-ssec and Tactile rated 2min lOsec. Lack of experience by Tactile’s reinsman, R. M. Cameron, on the three-furlongs Melbourne track contributed to the favourite’s failure. .

Tactile was one back on the outside with a trail when the field settled down. In the second lap, D. J. Townley sprinted Robin Dundee around the field to have the outside row, but Tactile followed her through and went past Robin Dundee to sit on the outside of Minuteman. He raced in the “death seat’’ for the last nine furlongs. Robin Dundee, with a perfect trail, ran around Tactile with a furlong to go and chalelnged Minuteman. The latter, which had dictated the pace and had never been off the fence, safely held the little Southland mare. Waitaki Hanover (24 yards) ran a creditable fifth. He started at 14/1 and rated 2min 9sec. Tactile and Robin Dundee are now to go to Sydney to contest races at Harold Park, leading up to the £5OOO Summer Cup there on Saturday, February 1. The New Zealand champion, Cardigan Bay, is to have his first Australian start at the season in this race.
