RACING Stablemates Fit For Trentham

The Riccarton trainer, J. C. Tomkinson, travels north tomorrow with a strong team of four horses for racing at the Wellington Cup meeting. Two of them, Shipmate and Hushaway, sprinted fast wide out on the course proper at Riccarton on Saturday.

A. J. Stokes, who will ride Hushaway in the Pencarrow Handicap, rode Shipmate in the trial, and the stable apprentice, M. J. WildennoHi, rode Hushaway. They were up to speed quickly at the five furlongs and after reeling off the opening furlong in 12 3-5 and the first two furlongs in 24 1-5, they finished a good gallop oil terms in 1:13 3-5. Shipmate, a winner at his only start so far, has no engagement on Wellington Cup day. Other members of Tomkinson's team for Trentham are Standout and Everglades. They were paired for a mile on Saturday morning and ran ttie distance in 1:46 2-5, quickending slightly for the last half-mile in 52 3-5. A. J. Stokes rode Standout and Wildermoth rode Everglades. G. W. Mein has been engaged for Standout in the high-weight at Trentham on Saturday and Wildermoth will team with Everglades in the Camp Handicap, a race for apprentice riders.

NOT HURRIED Magician (M. J. Skelton) worked away from the mile and a quarter and strode over the last mile in 1:49 and the final half-mile in 53 3-5. The Gloaming Stakes, the “Trentham Derby,” will be his first race at the Wellington Cup meeting. Newbrook (C. T. Wilson) sprinted seven furlongs in 1:34 4-5, the last four in 54 1-5. On Account (A. Martin) was sent a mile, and went about his work with a will. He recorded 1:43 1-5 for the distance and 50 2-5 for the last half-mile.

Polly’s Pal (C. T. Wilson) outpaced Symbolist (A. Martin) from the half-mile, run in 51 4-5. Vitamise (Stokes) and Marlborough (Wilson) hurried over six furlong in 1:13 4-5. They reduced a long gap to Depending (Miss F. Kerr), which was to have accompanied them, but bounded away to a long lead before they reached the six-furlong peg. Depending ran her last halfmile in 51 2-5. She will run in the Camp Handicap on Wellington Cup day. Vitamise is being taken north for races on the second and third days at Trentham. Royal Leigh (McCann) and Gay Toby (Reriti) ran seven furlongs in 1:34 1-5 with Royal Leigh very keen to quicken. He will probably race next at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting.

Tire Soullilanders. Royal Bid and Manners, were al the track on Saturday morning but did not gallop. There were more arrivals from the south yerterday, a-nd most of them will continue their journey to Wellington tomorrow.
