Important Gains For Canterbury Hockey

/CANTERBURY hockey has made two important gains from Australia in the husband and wife combination of T. Crossen, an Australian Universities’ representative last season, and the former Miss M. Rigg, who has represented Australia in three international tournaments. They arrived in Christchurch last Monday—a week after their marriage. Crossen, a New Zealander who has been working in Australia for the last five years as a school teacher, has obtained a post at St Andrew’s College in charge of the biology department. He intends to play hockey for his old club, University. His wife has said that she hopes to play in New Zealand and perhaps help with coaching in clubs. Crossen has played hockey in Victoria and Western Australia for club teams and was manager of two successful Western Australian schoolboy teams which played at the Australian championships. This year he was a member of the Western Australian University team which toured Brisbane and was later selected as vice-captain of the Australian Combined University team which played against the New Zealand Universities’ team in Brisbane. He is also a prominent athlete, having represented Canterbury both as a junior and a senior.

A Western Australian girl by birth, Mrs Crossen has an outstanding record in women’s hockey. She has captained club, state and Australian teams during her career.

Western Australia’s record in women’s hockey goes back to 1938. Since that time its state teams have only lost two championships (1954 and 1961). Mrs Crossen plays in the left half-back position and has represented Australia in three international tournaments, two overseas and one in Australia, and has been a member of every Western Australian state team since she was first selected in 1946, until 1960. She captained Western Australia in 1959 and 1960 and also the Australian team on her last tour. She retired from playing in 1960 and took up coaching.
