The South Africans had reason to be pleased with their captain, T. L. Goddard's batting form and the greatly improved display given by W. S. Farter in their match against a Combined XI at Hobart today. Goddard, playing his second game since his sinus operation, scored 95, his highest score in Australia, before playing on to his wicket. Farrer, who is on the fringe of selection for the second test, hit 10 fours in his 107, his first century of the tour. The pair added 100 in 98 minutes and the full partnership was worth 121. Later J. H. B. Waite and R. G. Pollock added 125 in 106 minutes. Pollock hit tin; a six and six 4's in his 63.
Earlier, E. J. Barlow had reached his 1000 runs for the tour before being caught off a defensive shot to end an opening stand of 77. Scores.
