BOXING DAY SPORTS

Keen Contests At Waimate

Ideal weather prevailed and a large crowd was present to enjoy a relaxing day at the Waimate Caledonian Society’s eighty-eighth sports meeting on Boxing Day. Gate receipts totalled £319, compared with £285 last year. The star of the professional cyclists was the visiting Australian. A O’Hagan. Recently arrived in New Zealand. O’Hagan has had a couple of competitive rides tn Christchurch. but Waimate was his first experience of a full-scale New Zealand sports meeting He was able to give the spectators a very clear indication of his speed and ability, and he carried off easily the major honours in the John Ross Memorial

The New Zealand cyclists performed well, chief among them being K. Brown ,J. Swanston. and K. Jeffrey. The Waimate amateur cyclist, D Stowell, had a good day. and his successes were very popular

Two local girls. M. Veitch and M. Daragh, were prominent in the women's events

But perhaps the most outstanding performance of the day—and certainly one that thrilled the crowd—was that of lan Hanson, a 13-year-o!d Waimate boy. who ran in the two mile event against the seniors and finished fourth, right up behind the leaders.
