USE OF DRUG LIMITED

Side Effects Noticed

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Dec. 27.

A New Zealand doctor said tonight the drug Ethionamide had been used locally but there was no cause for alarm.

The senior chest physician for Otago, Dr. R. F. Wilson, said the drug was only used occasionally here as it had unpleasant side effects in many cases. It had, however, been found to be a very useful drug. “Personally I don’t know of the drug being used on any pregnant women here,” said Dr. Wilson. “If it has been, then there have been no ill effects.” He added that Ethionamide had been in use in Northern Europe, particularly France, for five or six years with no reports of ill effects. Unlike in Britain where the drug could be bought over the counter of chemist shops, the handling of all Ethionamide in Otago has to be authorised by Dr. Wilson or his assistant.
