Hornby Cyclist Touring In Central Otago
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN. December 27.
Mr G. Murray will soon have 10,000 miles on his speedometer—lo,ooo miles of hard pedalling which has taken the 21-year-old Hornby bricklayer over most of New Zealand by cycle. Today Mr Murray paused in Alexandra for two pies and a bottle of soft drink before setting out on r iother stage of his Christmas cycling tour which has carried him from Christchurch tc Central Otago through Dunedin. Behind him he is towing a small trailer on scooter wheels which carries his camping gear, and in front of him was a stiff haul to Wanaka through the Cromwell gorge into a head wind However, his spirit was not daunted and he pushed on with the steady distancedevouring pace which has carried him through the North Island to Auckland,
and through the South Island to Wanaka to date. His ultimate destination is Te Anau, where he will forsake his cycle for a stout pair of boots to tramp the Milford track.
However, he will have visited Wanaka, and Queenstown during the trip> and is to return to Christchurch by bicycle through Invercargill and Dunedin.
His trip has not been trouble-free—a new wheel for the front was required in Dunedin, plus a new tube for the back tyre, and a brake cable, but Mr Murray has philosophically taken these set-backs in his stride. To him. there is no other way of spending a holiday and he would not exchange his bright yellow cycle, decorated with pennants from a number of towns he has visited, for the most comfortable vehicle possible.
