Mrs Young Leads In Pentathlon

Excellent performances in the high jump and hurdles gave Mrs V. Young (Technical) a commanding lead of 265 points after three events in the Canterbury women’s pentathlon championships at Rugby Park last evening.

Mrs Young scored 2865 points and her closest rival, the record holder. Mrs L. Wilson (Technical), had 2880 points. The Canterbury and New Zealand record is 4363 points and Mrs Young only has to clear 16®t in the long jump and 27sec in the 200 metres this evening to establish a new record. Both these figures are well within her capabilities. Mrs Young’s distance of 52ft siin for 1106 points in the shot was her best effort this season. But she exceeded expectations when she cleared sft 6in in the high jump, 3in higher than Mrs Wilson with whom she shares the Canterbury record of sft 6jin. It was these two events which put Mrs Young well into the lead for Mrs Wilson was only able to score 841 points with 38ft Bjin in the shot put. Into Head Wind Conditions for the 80 metres hurdles were far from ideal, but Mrs Wilson recorded a very good 11.9 sec for 904 points. This was her

best time this season, a firstclass performance into a head wind. Miss L. Curtis (Technical) scored 2492 points. She cleared sft 2in in the high jump and threw the shot 38ft 4jin.
