4 Girl Golfers From N.S.W.

Four talented New South Wales junior girl golfers are dut at Wellington on January 12 for a week of competitions and matches against leading New Zealand girls. They will be captained by Beatrice Hayley, Australian women's champion in 1961 and Australian junior champion since 1961. One of the most formidable of the visitors will be 20-year-old Diane Cross, who plays off a handicap of one. She was unbeaten when she played in the 1963 Australian Commonwealth team. The other members of the team will be 20-year-old Judy Mancell, New South T "ales State junior champion and State representative since 1961, who has a handicap of five, and Maria Hic v ey. aged 18, State schoolgirl champion whose handicap is eight ¥ ¥ ¥ 4B Years On Union Mr J. N. Millard, a member of the Wellington Rugby Union since 1926 probably

will retire from his position as chairman of the union’s management committee next season. He probably has the longest term of office of any member of a major Rugby union and his work for Wellington Rugby was recognised when the new stand at Athletic Park was named the Millard stand. Mr Millard, who managed the 1953-54 All Blacks on their tour of the British Isles, hopes to remain a member of the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union. ¥ ¥ ¥ Swimming Gain The West Coast’s loss will be Canterbury’s gain when the Brown family, wellknown m West Coast swimming circles, moves to Christchurch. W. Brown last season won the South Island boys’ 110 yards breaststroke event, a title he will defend at Greymouth on Saturday He was second in the New Zealand 230 yards breaststroke event and a finalist in the 110 yards.

His sister, Miss Frances Brown, has competed in New Zealand breaststroke events and holds the West Coast women’s breaststroke titles. A younger sister, Paula, is also a promising swimmer. * ¥ ¥ Two-Way Flight With nine rounds decided in the senior table tennis competition it appears at this stage that the series will be decided between last season’s winners, Selwyn I and Eagles. Each team contains strong all-round players and has won most matches comfortably. It appears unlikely that the other teams, which in the main have at least one weak player, will trouble the leaders. Selwyn I have V. N. Brightwell A. Vermes, Mrs T. May and a good junior, R. J. Sanderson while Eagles are relying on Canterbury's top player, J. Armstrong, nationally ranked junior P J. Ives, former South Island champion, B. D. P. William-

son, Mrs G. Evans, and Christchurch City soccer coach, G. Evans. ¥ ¥ ¥ Sponsored Players The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association has decided to sponsor last season’s national junior champion, P. Thomson, of Waikato, and one of last season’s semi-finalists, D. Simmonds, of Auckland, for the South Island championships at Nelson from January 1 to 4. the North Island championships and the national championships. Thomson won three titles at national junior championships in January, the doubles with Simmonds. He has been at School of Physical Education in Dunedin this year. Ranked third New Zealand junior after last season, Simmonds has just returned from a trip to Australia. Both are now in the intermediate class. The Nelson association had requested some sponsored young play, ers tor the tournament.
