ASHBURTON FAILS
Good Batting By P.B. Wight
The two Ashburton representatives in the Canterbury team to play New Zealand Universities this week, B. Tutty and R. G. Hortin, were both dismissed by the first ball they faced in a match between B. F. Hastings’ XI and Ashburton on Sunday. P. B. Wight batted attractively for Hastings’ team to make 51 and B. H. Hopkins hit five fours and two sixes in an aggressive 47. Scores:— Hastings’ XI 158 for eight wickets (Wight 51, Hopkins 47; Hortin two for 56. B. Sampson two for 34). Ashburton 70 (I. Blain 21, M. Blakely 19; P. A. Sharp two for five, D. J McKendry two for 13, D. L. Gallop two for 23).
Retiring.—One of Australian cricket’s greatest personalities, Ken Mackay, aged 37, of Queensland, will retire from first-class cricket at the end of this season.—(P.A.)
