RESEARCH ON PITCAIRN

Otago University Archaeologists

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 16. A party of archaeologists, led by Mr P. Gathercole of the anthropology department of the University of Otago, will sail on Christmas Eve for Pitcairn Island. The party intends to explore evidence left by the Polynesians who inhabited the island, but deserted it before the arrival of the Bounty mutineers in 1790. The expedition is part of a Pacific research programme which includes expeditions to the Society Islands, the Marquesas, Samoa and the Cook group. The programme is sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation and is under the direction of Dr. K. P. Emory of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu.
