JOBLESS IN AUSTRALIA

Figure Rose In

November

CANBERRA, December 16.

There were 59.500 persons registered as unemployed in Australia in November, the Minister for Labour and National Service (Mr McMahon) announced today. This was a rise of 7807 over the number of unemployment registrations in the previous month, he said. The 59,500 unemployment registrations at the end of November compared with 80.934 in November. 1982, and 100.057 in November. 1961. Mr McMahon said the rise in the number of unemployed last month occurred in New South Wales and Queensland only. Other States showed slight decreases in the unemployment rate. Mr McMahon said the rises in New South Wales and Queensland were caused by the registration of school leavers and, in Queensland, an increase of 1500 adult males because of a seasonal fall-off in the meat and sugar industries. Mr McMahon also reported a rise in the number of vacant jobs. Unfilled jobs throughout Australia rose by 7274 to 45.171 last month. Commenting on these figures. Mr McMahon said: “The demand for labour is strong. The rate at which jobs were notified was 12 per cent higher than in any previous November."
