Man Eluded Police

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, December 11. A man who was chased for an hour and a half, by a constable on the beat, then a patrol car, and finally by the police dog Duke, gave his pursuers the slip near the Panmure railway station about 4 a.m. today. The chase, which covered about five miles, began at 2.30 a.m., when Constable R. M. Smith, of Otahuhu, saw a man standing in the doorway of an Otahuhu shop. Later, a hammer wrapped in newspaper was found where the man climbed a fence in eduding the constable and before escaping in a car which was found abandoned.

At this stage the police dog was brought in.
