STAMPS FOR CHILDREN

“Generally Good Value”

In general, good value was given when stamps were bought in packets, “Consumer," the journal of the Consumer Council, says in the December issue. Many parents or relatives of children with an interest in stamps must wonder about the value of the stamps they bought as a Christmas or birthday present, the journal says. Some had complained to “Consumer” that they had been disappointed. The journal attempted to find out what happened when an adult with no knowledge of stamps wanted to spend say 10s on a present. In buying sample packets, it asked for selections for a boy of 12 who collected mostly New Zealand and some Commonwealth stamps, with a few sports issues in addition.

After examining the purchases and concluding that there is generally good value in packets, the journal recommends stamp traders to take greater care over the condition of stamps. It suggests that parents should encourage young collectors to pay attention to relative values.
