Enterprise, Opportunity
—I. G. B. Wilson (National) As I was walking through one of the streets of Riccarton the other day delivering pamphlets, I passed someone who was cutting the grass in his garden. Recognising me, he said: “Can’t you get someone else to do that for you?" “As a matter of fact,” I answered, “I have got a number of people helping me, but surely you can’t expect people to help you if you' are not prepared to help yourself.” After I had moved on I thought of the remark I had made, and felt that it contained a fundamental belief both of the National Party and of me personally. I believe that initiative should be encouraged and everyone should have the opportunity to make for himself the life of his choosing know that adequate rewards await enterprise. Those who can should be out to help others as well as themselves because responsibility must go hand in hand with freedom. This is the attitude both in government and in the individual that I stand for. As I go around the electorate I sag by the hard work that has gone into the new homes and gardens that most of you are putting this outlook into practice. I have met quite a number of Riccarton electors now but unfortunately time does not permit meeting very many more before November 30. However, do not hesitate to ring me to discuss any problem or idea you may have. Many already have | done so and they will tell I you I’m quite approachable. Will Call If I can, I will even call to see you, especially if you have a topic of interest to you and a few of your friends, and you arrange to get them all together. For instance, I have offered to come along and talk to a group of about a dozen interested people on State aid to private schools. i If elected, one of my prinl cipal aims would be to endea- : vour to keep the people in- ! formed of what goes on in i Parliament, and to make myj self available at any time to discuss local problems and to advise on any matter relating to government or to my special interests. As I am a professional engineer with a background of ’ design and construction gainI ed both in New Zealand and Australia, these interests include housing, building, public works and tourism, especI ially in relation to its promoj tion in the South Island. I Young people don’t want i rigid controls. They want to I work things out for them- ■ selves and in so doing will i develop a sense of pride and self reliance. Women are I more and more having their say, and are being listened to for once. Let us ensure that we do keep on developing a responsible society. Let us aim at individuality. Let us consider the other person’s point of view, and, above all, let us vote National this time.
