COURT-MARTIAL AT BURNHAM

Absence Without Leave Temporary Lance-Corporal A. E. Smith, Royal New Zealand Army Service Chips, was sentenced to 28 days’ detention and reduced to the ranks by a district courtmartial at Burnham tadUtary camp. Lance-Corporal Smith, who was charged with being absent without leave tor 31 days, pleaded guilty. Hie sentence is subject to confirmation by the convening authority. Lance-Corporal Smith told the Court that his engagement with his fiancee was broken in September and that he left Trantham, where he was on a tour of duty, and came to the South Island to get awiay from everything. While Shooting in the bush near the Haast Pass he was advised by a friend to give himself up, and surrendered himself at Burnham. The accused was defended by Major J. S. Undeirdowii, and Lieutenant W. S. Collins prosecuted. The judgeadvocate was Major G. C. C; Sandston. Court members were Captain R. W. Bowman and Lieutenant D. S. Baker.
