KERRS REACH LOOP
League Asks For Decision
It was time a decision was made on the old loop in the Avon river at Kerrs reach—whether it should be locked altogether or the river allowed to run through—said the Aranud Progress League in a letter to the Christchurch Drainage Board. The short bank finished abruptly in places and the hanging trees and foliage obscured the view of residents who wanted to keep a close watch on children playing near the river, the league said.
The loop was the outfall for Brittans drain and at least five other pipelines, said the chief engineer (Mr H. F. Page). It was essential that a waterway be maintained. and because of the limited fall it was necessary that it be reasonably wide to keep the loss of hydraulic head to a minimum.
The City Council had agreed to cut down any trees necessary to permit dumping of spoil to reduce the width of the loop.
