The population of Tjikeusal district in West Java have been forced to turn to mango seeds to eat because they can no longer afford to buy rice. Reporting this today, the Communist Party organ, Harian Rakyat, said the price of rice was so high in the area that people could now afford to eart it only once every three days. Since the break of trade relations with Malaysia food prices in Indonesia have rocketed to new heights. The price of rice has more than doubled and in some districts trebled, while the value of the rupiah has continued to decrease. The Government last week introduced a new bank note—the 5000 rupiah denomination. worth about £2.
