TRIANGULAR TOURNEY
Steeplechase Will Stay The suggested deletion of the 3000 metres steeplechase from the programme for the triangular athletics tournament between Canterbury, Otago and Southland later this season was'd scussed at last evening’s executive committee meeting of the Canterbury Centre. The chairman (Mr J. E. Millar) said that Competitors wishing to enter in both the three miles and steeplechase needed a rest between the two events, but Mr G. E. Voller said that the specialist steeplechasers should be catered for. Mr E. Lunn, who had sug, gested the various additions and deletions to the programme. said that he was quite happy to withdraw the part of his motion that had deleted the steep’echase. A suggestion from Mr D. W McKenzie that the senior women's high jump be held before the junior event met with fairly wide approval. “If we have rain the approach cuts up.” said Mr G I. Anderson, “and we have some of the best women high jumpers in New Zealand here; they should make their mark this year.’’ Mr Curie said that girls in the under 15 grade had only two events they could enter for on Saturdays: the 75 yards and the long jump. And that is why we have so many girls competing in the long jump, ’’whether they are any good at it or not.” He suggested other events, including the 220 yards, the 80 metres hurdles and the discus, and it was left to the programmes sub-committee to fit some of them in each week.
