Dispute Over University Buildings At Ham
A legal opinion is to be obtained by the Waimairi County Council on the question of building permits for university buildings. The town planning committee’s report, which was presented to last evening’s meeting of the council, said the matter of the University of Canterbury proposing and executing building operations at Ham without reference to the council had been considered.
In addition to seeking a legal opinion, the council will request the Vice-chancel-lor of the university (Dr. L. L. Pownall) to submit plans of all proposed buildings on university property to the council for consideration and comment.
Russley Road.—The council intends widening Russley road between Wairakei road and Avonhead road during the 1964-65 period. The Paparua County Council will be asked to meet its share of the costs.
New Pavilion.—. Approval was given for the erection of a new cricket pavilion near the toilet block in the Upper Riccarton Domain. The council agreed to make a grant to the Upper Riccarton Cricket Club amounting to half the total cost of the pavilion, but not exceeding £4OO. Road Danger.—The Ministry of Works is to be asked if
it has any proposals for the control of traffic at the intersection of Yaldhurst road and Russley road “having regard to the dangers which have been created at this intersection through the Paparua County Council having permitted the construction of a new outlet from Carmen road into Yaldhurst road immediately opposite Russley road.” It was suggested that a roundabout would be one way of overcoming the danger.
Building Permits. One hundred and sixty-eight building permits to the value of £213,611 were issued last month. Fees amounted to £896.
Tender Accepted.—The Precision Building Company, Ltd.’s tender of £3236 12s 6d was accepted for the construction of a new pumping station and electrical substation in Burwood road. Road Reconstruction. —Tenders for reconstruction work on Annex and Johns roads will be called when surveys have been completed. Fendalton Road. The county engineer (Mr I. Calvert) said it had been estimated that £ 120,000 would be needed during the next five years for widening Fendalton road.
Pensioners’ Telephones.— The council is to make another approach to the Post Office in an effort to get a public telephone booth near the counoil’s penstoners’ flats in Raleigh street. The Post Office’s reply to a previous request said that a number of telephones would be provided in the Bishopdale shopping centre but the council, considers it would be too far for the pensioners to go. Health Inspector.—Mr R. A. Ruskin was appointed to the council’s staff as a health inspector. He is at present employed by the Department of Health.
